Help Remember Our Veterans!

By: Lauren S.

This Tuesday, November 9, Major Chuck Larson is discussing his book, Heroes Among Us: Firsthand Accounts of Combat from America’s Most Decorated Warriors in Iraq and Afghanistan at the Central Library. Since 2002, over one million Americans have served in Iraq and Afghanistan; and thousands of them have died. Heroes Among Us tells the remarkable stories of these courageous warriors (Library, 2010).

Sarah Early, Youth Specialist at the Des Moines Public Library, and I have been working closely on a fundraiser that will be launched the night of Major Larson’s program. Audience members will have the opportunity to purchase a pair of warm and much needed Fox River Mills socks to send to Sarah’s son and his squadron – US Marine Corps HMH-361 in Afghanistan. For just $10.00, participants will receive two cards which can be personalized and attached to the socks.

The Library Staff Association has set a goal of sending at least 300 pairs of socks to Afghanistan. This project will run until November 27th in order for the marines to receive socks in time for the holidays, upcoming cold weather, and in the hopes that they will know how much they are cared for and appreciated. Sarah has been wonderful to work with; and I am so happy that I can help ease a marine’s mother’s worries while helping to give a huge morale boost to the men and women serving our country.
